Friends of Ontario Parks

Ontario Parks is proud to be supported by 25 Friends organizations.

Friends of Ontario Parks are independent, not-for-profit charitable organizations. Each Friends group is dedicated to supplementing and enhancing the unique educational, recreational, research and resource protection mandates of the parks they are affiliated with.

As incorporated entities, Friends are governed by a board of directors; they are guided by their organization’s by-laws and letters patent; and they are led by a board chair and in some organizations supported by an executive director or general manager. Friends work locally with a park superintendent, natural heritage education leaders, and other park liaisons as designated by the park superintendent. All parties work together collaboratively to achieve mutually beneficial objectives.

Many campers will be familiar with the valuable work Friends do to make their camping experiences more enjoyable and to contribute to Ontario Parks’ successes. Here are some notable accomplishments of Friends of Ontario Parks:

  • Outdoor Classroom at Frontenac Provincial Park
  • Rolling Boardwalk Project at Pinery Provincial Park
  • Wild Bird Cam at Algonquin Provincial Park
  • Tower Trail Bridge at MacGregor Point Provincial Park

Each Friends group is unique and contributes to park management and visitor experiences in different ways.

Ontario Parks’ first Friends organization, Friends of Algonquin Park was established in 1983. More than 30 years later an entire network of Friends organizations has been established by local community members and by countless campers who have grown to love and respect a park that is special to them.
